Vrgada Island
Small and peaceful island in the central Adriatic
Vela Luka Harbour is located on the western side of Korčula Island, deep inside one of the largest natural bays in the southern Adriatic. The harbour extends inland through a long sheltered inlet surrounded by smaller coves and wooded hills, providing very good protection from most winds.
Vela Luka Harbour is located on the western side of Korčula Island, deep inside one of the largest natural bays in the southern Adriatic. The harbour extends inland through a long sheltered inlet surrounded by smaller coves and wooded hills, providing very good protection from most winds.
The harbour includes town quay berths, local moorings and operational ferry areas. Berthing for visiting yachts is limited and depends on availability outside the ferry and working waterfront sections. Manoeuvring is generally straightforward due to the wide inner bay and calm conditions inside the inlet.
Regular ferry traffic operates between Vela Luka and the mainland, so attention is required near the ferry quay and approach routes.
Outside the operational zones, the harbour remains calm and well protected even during less settled weather. Many yachts also anchor in the quieter inner parts of the bay.
The town lies directly along the waterfront, with supermarkets, restaurants, cafés and provisioning options within walking distance. As one of the larger towns on Korčula Island, Vela Luka offers more services than many smaller island harbours in the area.
From a sailing perspective, Vela Luka is often used as a sheltered stop when cruising between Korčula, Lastovo and the central Dalmatian islands. Its deep natural bay makes it one of the most reliable protected harbours in this part of the Adriatic.
